Professional Synopsis
Twenty-five years experience researching, writing, and editing software documentation, and ten years experience developing web sites. Experience includes UNIX, Linux, varieties of MS Windows, Macintosh, VMS, Xerox, and Aegis operating systems; mainframe, workstation, PC, and Macintosh-based text processing tools; and, fluency with HTML and working knowledge of JavaScript and CSS.
Experience
- Technical Writer, Wayport (now AT&T), Austin, TX (3/08 to present). Responsible for all technical documentation for the Engineering Development group.
- Created, updated, or edited dozens of users guides, reference manuals, field installation guides, hundreds of release notes, and other types of information units.
- Rebranded documents from Wayport to AT&T after the buyout, and updated boilerplate dates on all templates each year.
- Overhauled over 400 wiki pages in the Engineering wiki; edited them, removed redundant pages, assigned all pages to categories for easier browsing, and suggested additional software modules to upgrade the system.
- Designed and built dozens of SharePoint sites, and created JavaScript and CSS features in SharePoint such as expanding and contracting spreadsheets, slideshows, and semantic maps with clickable hyperlinks (using image map).
- On a daily basis granted access to libraries and documents in the SharePoint and wiki sites. Became the primary source for knowledge of materials in the various information sources at AT&T Wi-Fi Services (AWS), and fielded requests for information on a weekly if not daily basis.
- Technical Writer, IBM (contract), Austin, TX (2/05 to 6/07). Wrote AIX and Linux user documentation. Information Development units included users' and installation guides, reference manuals, man pages, web content, and white papers, using a variety of writing software tools.
- Technical Writer, Dell Incorporated (contract), Round Rock, TX (6/04 to 2/05). Prepared internal customer support documentation for access by general public, and wrote product documentation for the Information Development group.
- Writer and editor (11/02 to 11/04). With Bernd Kretschmer, Migration to Linux Guide, draft only, no published. Also edited various seminar presentations, etc. for Mr. Kretschmer.
- Technical Writer, Dell Financial Services (contract), Austin, TX (11/01 to 12/02). Developed project documents, wrote test scripts, and helped maintain intranet content and structure.
- Content Developer and Technical Writer, Vignette, Austin, TX (7/00 to 7/01). Wrote and prepared content to be available for access from the Vignette Global Marketplace, developed embedded help within the Vignette Global Marketplace, and rebranded and indexed Vignette Content Management System documentation.
- Web Site Developer and Technical Writer, Tivoli (IBM), Austin, TX (6/96 to 7/00).
- Worked on the Tivoli Implementation Methodology, or TIM, project. The TIM was a large and complex web-based tool to aid Tivoli Professional Services people install and configure Tivoli applications at customer sites.
- Worked with the Special Projects group in developing and maintaining the documentation for approximately 15 disparate ad hoc software projects. These Special Projects were custom tailored for individual customers, and addressed needs beyond the existing Tivoli applications.
- Wrote release notes for eight separate products. The notes each ranged in size from 16 pages to over 200 pages.
- Developed and supported numerous web sites.
- Worked with the Destiny (hardware communication software) writers to help them in preparation for release of their on-line and hardcopy documentation.
- Technical Writer, Pedernales Electric Cooperative (contract) Johnson City, TX (5/96 to 6/96). Wrote procedures for a user interface that the utility installed into their system. The user interface was an industry-specific application.
- Technical Writer, Farm Credit Bank of Texas (contract) Austin, TX (5/95 to 11/95). Wrote procedures for a character-based interface running on IBM AS/400 hardware. The writing tools were MS Windows-based.
- Technical Writer, Synthesys Technologies, Austin, TX (3/92 to 2/95). Solely edited and wrote all of the more than fifteen users' guides and reference manuals, and the on-line help files for the user interfaces of the products. Synthesys' products are full-text database search and retrieval software packages.
- Technical Writer, Scientific and Engineering Software, Inc. (contract) Austin, TX (12/91 to 2/92). Edited and wrote reference and users' manuals for SES's systems simulation software.
- Technical Writer, Boeing (contract) Federal Way, WA (6/91 to 9/91). Wrote procedures documentation for Boeing's Sheet Metal Center, which used VMS-based software and a variety of machinery to manufacture parts for Boeing's Fabrication Division.
- Technical Writer, Nabisco (contract) Portland, OR (8/90 to 12/90). Wrote training and reference documentation of Nabisco's automation of their bakery. The automation included an extensive graphical user interface running on dedicated hardware provided by Foxboro of Massachusetts.
- Lecturer, Portland State University Portland, OR (9/90 to 12/90). Taught Writing 327, Technical Report Writing, and Writing 329, Document Layout and Design. Classes discussed grammar, writing style, use of layout principles in documents, and most common responsibilities of technical writers in businesses.
- Technical Writer-Course Developer, Mentor Graphics (contract) Beaverton, OR (2/90 to 6/90). Involved in documenting a variety of applications that used computer-aided engineering in the design of integrated circuits.
- Technical Writer, Tektronix; Austin, TX, and Beaverton, OR (8/86 to 2/90). Project leader for TekWAVES waveform verification product's documentation, which included extensive on-line help files. Chose and set-up Macintosh desktop publishing hardware and software, and designed the manual. Wrote PCB and Gate Array documentation consisting of users' guides, reference guides, and installation guides for VAX and Apollo applications. Supervised system administration for the Xerox Star publishing system.
- Teaching Fellow and Adjunct Professor, University of North Texas, Denton, TX (9/81 to 5/86). Taught writing, including technical and business writing, to sophomore business majors.
